THE STORY OF DEWARUCI

(Unedited transcription of an explanatory sign near the ship)

Dewaruci is quite a popular figure in Indonesia society. The figure was taken from a puppet show story which title is Ramayana. The story tells about a war between Pandawa and Kurawa. It consists of instructive and educational teaching of Indonesian life philosophy.

Bima, the second of Pandawa (five brothers) knight, had an honest character, in word and deed, faithful to the promise and oath, obedient to command, had a fair judgment, strong determination and resilient in working. Due to both his nature and supernatural power, Bima became the backbone of Pandawa. Bima interested in honing his power to Durna, a powerful witch who served his enemy’s kingdom (Kurawa). One day Bima came to Durna to learn the perfection of life. Bima’s willingness to seek the perfection of life was a good opportunity for Durna to kill Bima. Durna gave an impossible task to Bima which might perish Bima before the task had done. Durna told Bima if Bima want to achieve perfection in life, he must get “Tirta Amerta” located at the bottom of the ocean. Bima who felt no trouble against waves became brave to advance to the middle of the ocean, but after a period of time, his strength was weakened. Then Bima was drowned and arisen by the waves.

In such circumstances Bima met a dragon, named “Klanabuntung”, which suddenly attacked him. With all his power, he tried to defend himself; finally the dragon could be killed. However he was powerless to resist the waves, and even then he almost unconscious. There was no other way for Bima but focusing his mind to ask for help from the Almighty. He got whispered to use the “Aji Jalasanggara” which he had obtained from the Bayu God. Thanks to the miracle of the spell, Bima recovered his strength and was able to break free from the influence of ocean waves, where the actual Bima’s spirit at that time had separated from his body. At the same time Bima saw someone in front of him who looked like himself, only smaller. When Bima asked him his name, he answered that his name was DEWARUCI. Influenced by subtle rays emanating from Dewaruci’s body, Bima felt confident that Dewaruci was the one who could provide clues for him to find “Tirta Amerta”. Furthermore Bima asked about “Tirta Amerta.” Considering that kind of determination, Dewaruci ordered Bima to get into Dewaruci’s body if he wanted to find it. At first Bima hesitated because according to Bima’s sight, it’s impossible for him to get into Dewaruci. Once again Dewaruci ordered him to enter the body through his left ear. Finally with all his confidence he could get into Dewaruci’s body. In Dewaruci’s body, Bima got discourse that eventually made him realized his true inner power, and reached the perfection of life.

That is why this ship named Dewaruci. We hope that this ship can teach Indonesian Naval Cadets like Dewaruci taught Bima so that the Cadets can find their true inner power and reach the perfection of life.
